LEVEL 1 ENGLISH

The Level 1 English curriculum aims to teach information typically taught in grades K-2 with a primary focus on early reading, handwriting, and language comprehension. We have combined age-appropriate books and practice materials to meet the following learning goals:

Virginia K-2 Foundations for Reading & Writing

Reading

For reading, I suggest Ready To Read from Simon & Schuster. When your child is ready to start reading (when they recognize letters and their sounds) they can jump right into reading through this line of readers. I really like these because the early readers include word families and sight words that children can rehearse before reading. (I’ve found it easy to copy these onto flashcards for easy phonics and reading practice.) Comprehension questions are also included, which some school districts require for satisfaction of their standards. New readers are consistently being released, and with over a hundred titles at each reading level, you’re sure to find plenty that your child will enjoy. You can read this page for information directly from the publisher.

HANDWRITING

My child DETESTS workbooks, and currently has no desire to write outside of art. But handwriting is a skill he needs to learn, so I created these handwriting packets that combine real-life images with illustrations. They’re full color with enough work on one sheet to satisfy practice for one day. Would he rather hone his pterodactyl flying skills? Absolutely. But did he also ask for the Letter O Octopus sheet when he saw the image of a real octopus on it? Sure did. Those Os look amazing, too! (You can purchase these practice sheets from my TPT store.)
